Vallam Kali/Onam Event 2024
The American Malayali Heritage Foundation hosted its inaugural Onam celebration and Vallam Kali program on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Cow Meadow Park, Freeport, NY. This first-of-its-kind event brought one of Kerala’s most cherished cultural traditions to New York, home to the largest concentration of Malayalis in the U.S.
With over 500 people in attendance, the celebration featured a thrilling Vallam Kali (traditional boat race), a graceful Thiruvathira dance performance, the exhilarating beats of the Chenda Melam (traditional Kerala drums), and an exciting tug-of-war competition with prizes. Attendees also enjoyed a customary Onam Sadya feast, showcasing Kerala cuisine.
Onam, more than just a harvest festival, embodies unity, prosperity, and cultural pride. It is a celebration that transcends boundaries, bringing together people of all communities – a spirit that was vividly brought to life at this event. The success of this program marked the beginning of an annual tradition, fostering connections within the Malayali diaspora, and welcoming everyone to join in this cultural festivity in the years to come.
